COVID 19 Modifications to Tournaments - Spectators

Due to the continued presence of the corona virus in our communities, the following modifications are being made to our tournament procedures and protocols

Spectators - To protect the environments inside the gyms, each team in the boys tournaments are give 3 wristbands to give to spectators for the day.  The spectators are to be written on the roster, temperatures recorded, wear a mask at all times, contact tracing info collected and wear a designated spectator wristband the entire day.  Spectators may not change off between matches - the 3 designated spectators are for the day.  The coach will have the responsibility to keep the wristbands between tournaments and give them to the designated spectators at the next tournament.  If a wristband is lost, none will be replaced.  It is up to the club to determine how the designated spectators are selected for each tournament.

If the designated spectators are not willing to follow the required guidelines inside and outside the facility, we ask that they not be given a wristband.  There will be no argument over these guidelines - they are not optional nor are they suggestions.

The number of designated spectators may increase or be removed depending on the state status with the virus.  We all need to work together to be able to continue playing the game these boys love and use for physical and mental exertion.

Boys Tournament Format

  • Coaches Meeting: 8:30 START Time
  • Tournament START Time:  9 am
  • Check-in should be completed at the tournament desk prior to 8:30 am. A picture ID for each coach on the roster is required along with a medical release form for each player on the roster. There is an 8 point penalty to the team's first match if the coach is not checked in BEFORE 8:30 am.
  • The coach is to have recorded the temperatures of all those present (including coaches and the designated spectators) on the roster prior to check in.  The names of the designated spectators should be handwritten on the roster.
  • Rosters are required to have correct jersey numbers. The rosters will be checked off by the site director at check in.
  • Format - Teams are straight seeded into divisions of 8 (separated into 2 pools within each division), 4, or 3.
  • For tournaments 1-3:  Format is pool play only.  Once pool play is completed, final places will be determined by the best sets or points percentage between the 2 teams finishing in the same position in the two pools of the same division.  1st v 1st, 2nd v 2nd, 3rd v 3rd and 4th v 4th.  After final standings of the pool are determined, 3 teams will move up, 3 teams will move down and 2 teams will stay in the same division for the next tournament.
  • For tournaments 4-5 if the virus situation allows:  Pool play will be followed by cross pool match play for final standings in the division. 1st v 1st, 2nd v 2nd, 3rd v 3rd, 4th v 4th.  Three teams will move up, three teams will  move down and 2 teams will stay in the division.  The teams will stay as they finished after play in tournament #5 for seeding into the Region Championships - no movement up or down.
  • No teams will move between Div 7 and Div 8.
  • Match play is best 2 of 3 sets to 25, 3rd set to 15, if needed. Ties will be resolved by the standard procedure: 2 way tie = head-to-head; 3 way tie = set % (sets won / total sets played), then if needed point % (points won / total points played) -- at no time will head-to-head apply in a 3 way tie.
  • Please note: for any 3 team division, the 3 team pool will play auto 3 sets to 25 (if one team wins the first 2 sets, the 3rd set will not be considered in set % and point % calculations in the event of a 3-way pool tie).  This is not optional.

  • COVID-19 Restrictions The health and safety of our participants is first and foremost in our minds as we set out on this season. Restrictions will be in place until such time as COVID-19 is no longer in the pandemic stage. These restrictions are to preserve the health and safety of our participants as well as allow the facilities we use to remain open for business. Those violating any of the restrictions will be asked to leave the premises and not return.

SPECTATORS: Spectators are not restricted.

MASKS:  Spectators are encouraged to wear masks when inside the facilities when flu and COVID infections are running high.  Where social distancing cannot happen, all should wear a mask.  Reminder it is up to each individual to take care of their own health and do what is need to maintain their health - no matter what anyone else is doing.

TEAM CAMPS: Team camp areas should be restricted in size to provide social distancing and allow for the players and coaches to be present in the team camp.

REMINDER FOR TEAM CAMPS:  The AZ Region has a Pack It In, Pack It Out policy.  All team camps should be cleaned up at the end of the day and the trash from each team camp should be taken home to dispose of.  We need to help out the site directors and take our own trash home.
