West Valley Freeway Closures

I-10 ramp closures mark new phase of South Mountain Freeway work

Multiple ramps to close along West I-10 corridor. (tl;dr at end)

Please visit AZ511 for the latest details on traffic and road closure.

Changes are in store for motorists in the West Valley as multiple ramps leading to and from Interstate 10 will be permanently closed and reconfigured over the next several months to make room for an interchange connecting to the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway. This will also require several weekend closures of I-10 until ramp work is completed this fall.

In place of the ramps, the Arizona Department of Transportation and Connect 202 Partners, the developer responsible for building the South Mountain Freeway, will construct new roadways parallel to I-10 providing local access between 51st and 67th avenues that will permanently replace freeway access at 59th Avenue.

The first ramp closure is scheduled for the I-10 westbound off-ramp at 51st Avenue, which will be closed from Saturday, Jan. 27, to Saturday, March 3. In conjunction with this ramp closure, westbound I-10 will be closed between 43rd and 51st avenues from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, and 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29.

The construction of the new access roads, which will be completed over the next nine months, will change on how drivers access I-10 between 51st and 67th avenues. Motorists will have dedicated on- and off-ramps at 67th Avenue in addition to the access road.

Motorists wishing to enter or exit the freeway in this area will eventually use these new 2-mile-long roadways to access local streets, similar to the I-10 stretch between 91st and 107th avenues near the Loop 101 junction. For example, a driver on westbound I-10 needing to get off at 59th Avenue will exit at 51st Avenue and travel west on the access road to 59th Avenue.

This work will require weekend closures of I-10 as well as long-term and permanent closures of existing on- and off-ramps. During the weekend closures, traffic will be diverted to McDowell Road or Van Buren Street.

The I-10 ramp closures are expected to last approximately 30-60 days for each ramp.

Important Tournament Information - Please Read!

  • Any teams traveling to out of state qualifiers - A coach or other rostered certified adult is required to ref as an R2 for every match when assigned as the work team at National Qualifier tournaments.  It is strongly recommended (although not required) that a rostered adult R2 at least one match at every AZ Region tournament to remain proficient for qualifiers.

  • PLEASE!!! Let the Arizona Region Office know if you will not be at the tournament PRIOR to Saturday. There is a $100 fine for teams that "no-show". The point is that it creates a big problem if there is a team that does not show.

  • Coaches - please have your teams on site and ready to play at the start time even if they are to referee first round.  A "no show" at start time will change the division format immediately.  Everyone needs to be ready to play.

  • Purple Card policy will be in effect.

  • Coaches you must be available during ref assignments to help with scorekeeping and officiating.  You are also responsible for your parent's behavior and "team camp" area clean up.

  • Let us be reminded that facilities are one of the most difficult parts of putting together a successful season. To that end, we MUST treat them with the utmost respect. That means keep your coffee, food and coolers outside, NO COOKING OF ANY KIND (includes crockpots, hotplates, sterno heated chafing dishes, barbeques, anything that produces heat, etc) on the premesis, pick up all the trash around your bench area and your "camp" area, NO ALCOHOL on site, and park in designated parking spaces only. Treat all facility personnel as if they have the authority to ask you to move your stuff because they do. Thanks for your help in making this a very successful season.

Parents: Please make a special effort to keep food and drink out of our facilities. We must also make sure to clean up after ourselves. This is THE major source of the reluctance of athletic directors to let us use gyms. We need to do a much better job keeping food and drink (including coffee and coolers) out of the gym!

( ) around a team name indicates that we know that team is not playing in this tournament.

Region Championships

  • Coaches Meeting: 7:30 am START Time
  • Tournament START Time:  8 am

Region Championships tournaments are here. The format is very different than our regular power tournaments. The tournament will start the 1st match at 8am and last most of the day instead of just half day. Lots of information follows. Please read it!!

Parents: There is no lunch break built into the tournament. Please bring food with you or send someone for food. Neither the coach nor the players should leave the site for food. Do not stop for lunch when moving to another site for bracket play. The bracket play will start when teams have arrived to start the tournament. Sites are in contact with each other to know when play has ended at each site. Penalties for being late to ref assignments or match play will be enforced. Several sites have snack bars open for business if food can't be brought with you.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY FOOD OR DRINKS INTO ANY GYM. ALL COOLERS ARE TO BE LEFT OUTSIDE. NO EXCEPTIONS ARE ALLOWED AT ANY GYM. ONLY WATER IN CLOSED CONTAINERS FOR PLAYERS AND COACHES IS ALLOWED IN THE GYMS.

NO COOKING OR HEATING OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED AT ANY OF OUR SITES AS WELL.

NO ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED ON THE CAMPUSES OF ANY OF OUR SITES - NOT EVEN ON A SATURDAY OR SUNDAY FOR ADULTS ONLY. THE SCHOOLS ARE ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND DRUG FREE ZONES 24/7 - THIS IS A STATE LAW.

PLEASE CLEAN UP YOUR TEAM CAMP AREA. PLEASE BAG YOUR TRASH AND TAKE IT WITH YOU. DO NOT LEAVE WRAPPERS AND FOOD BEHIND. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD WAY TO MAKE SURE NO OTHER PERSONAL ITEMS ARE LEFT BEHIND.

Coaches: Come to check in with a CURRENT WebPoint roster (no handwritten rosters, no team lists) your picture ID and medical release forms for each player on your team. The roster submitted should be current and signed by the coach. Any player on the roster that is not there should be crossed off. Any player or coach not listed on the roster is not eligible to participate.

Division Play -

The seeding is based on the finish of the last power tournament. There was no movement up or down after the last tournament. Teams stayed in the order of finish for seeding of the Region Championships. The teams are then snake seeded through divisions into varying group sizes depending on the size of the division.  Pool play may be followed by cross-pool matches.  Based on their finish, most teams will need to travel to another site for their bracket play. For the most part, the brackets will be 6 or 4 team single elimination brackets with consolation games for place.
