Great pay and a fun way to stay in the game!

Whether you’re a former player or a fan ready for a new perspective, this is your chance to stay in the game, keep the passion alive, and become part of our vibrant volleyball community!

As a referee with the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball, you’ll make a difference on the court, sharpen your game knowledge, and earn extra income while supporting the next generation of athletes.

"Officiating for Juniors and students is such a great way for them to make money because they get to choose when they work. The flexibility is the most appealing part of it. My daughter has been a student athlete her whole life and hasn't been able to get a job because of her year-round schedule, so officiating tournaments on her off-weekends was the best way for her to make fun and easy money! Even now, as a college athlete, she still officiates when she has the time. But this is also appealing to parents and adults in general for the same reasons. The flexibility is so great!"

CREATE YOUR OWN SCHEDULE

Long-time club, high school, and college volleyball player Kyla Chavez served as a junior official for the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball.

Check out what she has to say about her time above the net here.

"After being 3 years out of the Junior Official Development Program [JODP], I have received so many opportunities to travel, work college matches and move on up the rankings. If it were not for the AZ Region being willing to invest in the next generation, I would not have had these opportunities, and for that I am very grateful. I would highly encourage anyone and everyone to join the Junior Officiating Development Program because your knowledge of the game will grow exponentially, it is highly flexible, and the longevity of it is great!" -Kyla Chavez

PAY IS BETTER THAN MINIMUM WAGE

Brenden Matteson also played high school and club volleyball. Check out what he enjoyed most about his time as a junior official here.

Q. What would say are the benefits of referring games?
A. The pay is a lot better than any minimum wage job and it keeps you involved in the sport. You also get to watch volleyball for free, and if you’re good enough you get to watch real volleyball. Your judgment is the precedent of the game, so you have the power to say “Oh, that was a double.”

Q. Do you feel this is a good way for youth to make some extra money on the weekends? Does this job offer any other benefits, i.e. résumé building, experience, etc.?
A. Yes of course, it can easily be a side hustle since it is only on the weekends, and it teaches valuable skills like Communication, Time Management, and Critical Thinking because you have to translate judgment based off of the rules you know.

PAY SCALE

Probationary (1st year and new officials): $25/match
Provisional (2nd year and up, requires rating advancement): $30/match
Regional (requires rating advancement) $35/match
Junior National & National (requires extensive rating advancement) $40/match

On any given Saturday or Sunday, our officials can make anywhere from $300 to $480 a day, depending on the amount of matches they work and their rating. And maybe add that there are multiple 2 and 3-day tournaments, where those earnings can double and/or triple!
