Jim Stone of USA Volleyball explains that many players, especially young players, have a hard time hitting the ball with a solid hand contact: fingers spread wide and palm fully contacts the ball.

Train young players with a simple progression: first, have players hold the ball in their non-dominant hand and perform a relaxed, easy swing and contact against the ball. Second, two players partner up and pass and then perform a hitting contact on the ball. Continue until the ball has dropped.
