Arizona Region a Catalyst for Special Olympics adding Volleyball to Summer Games

To support the UNIFY Project Grant that Special Olympics of Arizona received this year to encourage school age unified sports, SOAZ is excited to announce the addition of volleyball to the Summer Games line up of events.

If you are interested in starting a unified school age volleyball program, please contact Brian Quinn at brianq@soaz.org or 602-230-9135 as there is some funding allocated to assist with this process.

Volleyball events offered at Summer Games include: traditional volleyball, unified volleyball and volleyball skills.

In order to encourage participation in volleyball at Summer Games, eight weeks of training will be required to register for the event but an area competition is not required.
Special Olympics director Nadine Armstrong said, “SOAZ is also thankful for the assistance from the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball who is assisting with launching Special Olympics volleyball.”

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer coach or help with the games, contact Eric at erichbke@msn.com

Schedule Changes for the Region Championships

The Region has had to revise the schedule for the Region Championships once again to avoid the State track tournament and several valley graduations on those days.
You can find the newly revised junior schedule at http://www.azregionvolleyball.org/juniors/girls/schedule.html

2009 Boys National HP Tryouts

The AZ Region will again be hosting a Boys National HP Tryouts in 2009. The session will be March 1 at Grand Canyon University from 12 noon - 4 pm. This is during the Arizona boy’s high school season but participation is allowed by the AIA as explained below by Collin Powers of USAV.

"Our USA Volleyball High Performance tryouts are the recognized USA Volleyball National Governing Bodymechanisms for determining placement of Youth, Junior and Select – aged players into our USA National, A2 and Developmental summer training and competition programs."

"The Boys’ Youth National Team and Men’s Junior National Team are both officially-recognized USA National Teams – and both are competing this year in their respective FIVB (Federacion Internationale de Volleyball) World Championships." As a result the AIA (per Glen Treadaway) does not prohibit participation through the National Governing Body for this one time tryout event.

The age definitions for these three age groups are listed below and based on international age definitions and not USAV eligibility definitions:

This will be a one-time tryout for the athletes for 2009. USAV will have staff at the tryout who will evaluate the athletes and determine program placement.

Registration for the 2009 tryout sessions will begin later this year. Check the USAV website http://volleyball.teamusa.org/content/index/2815 to sign up.

Help Us Grow the Game!!!

If you are 16 and older and a volleyball player who wants to help others, we want YOU!
The Region is looking for both male and female players that want to donate their time to help teach the game of volleyball. The Grassroots division is working on clinics and camps for outside organizations, schools, etc. to help grow the game.

The Region is assembling a team of volunteer youth coaches to help with these camps. These hours can be used for community service for National Honor Society, Boy and Girl Scouts, etc.
