Hesse
and Team Has Region Seeing Red!
Kaepa Club Red continued it's domination of the 18
Open division with its third straight title, knocking off the Kaepa
Club Red 17-1
team in the final held May 14th.
"It was cool to have a completely different
group this year." Coach
Joe Hesse admits. "The last couple of years we had won, that
was a core group we'd had for a while. But this group, this
was a good feeling for them especially because they hadn't
been very successful in club before this."
"From the very first practice, their work ethic
was pretty high and we battled adversity all year long." Hesse
says. "We
didn't play a single tournament with all ten original players.
But the tournament that we ended with, which was the Regional tournament,
we only had seven, but it was the right seven. They all worked really
well and worked well together."
The team won every region tournament it played in.
But Hesse knows personnel is the key to any successful season. "Sure
we win
a lot, but we get good talent too." Hesse comments. "You
can do only so much with what you have. We are talented. We have
arguably the best setter in Marina Mercer. We have probably the best
offensive terminator in Jessica Elley who was amazing all year long.
And you have a bunch of good kids filling roles. Expectations that
we set are high, and we work hard."
The outlook for the Arizona Region's 18 Open division
will stay in the Red, as Hesse has no intentions of leaving. "Our
17's got
second this season. Hesse says smiling. "I'll do 18's
for as long as I'm coaching at Club Red."
