AIA Adds Girls Sand Volleyball as Varsity Sport
It is official Girls Sand Volleyball is a new high school varsity sport. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) which oversees high school sports in Arizona has voted to add Girls Sand Volleyball to the list of girls sports beginning in Feb 2012. Arizona is the first state to adopt high school sand volleyball as a varsity sport.
Girls will be able to participate in both the sand programs at high schools and the indoor club programs which take place in the same season. This is due to the AIA changing their definition of volleyball to include the two different disciplines of indoor and sand. This fits with the USOC and USA Volleyball definitions making them two separate sports. It will not be a violation of AIA regulations for a high school sand participant to also participate in indoor club at the same time.
THANK YOU to the AIA (specifically Chuck Schmidt and Ron Halbach) and to Harold Cranswick (AZ Region Commissioner) and Eric Hodgson (AZ Region Outreach Director) for getting this off the ground!

Heads Up Concussion Education is Here
With the backing of the National Football League many states have enacted a "Concussion Law" aimed at educating the schools, coaches, players and parents to what concussions really are - A BRAIN INJURY. Senate Bill 1520 was signed into law last spring by Governor Jan Brewer. In effect what this law does is require that all student athletes and youth sports associations that use school facilities inform coaches, parents and players as to the signs and symptoms of concussion and what to do if you think you might have one.
Since the Arizona Region uses school facilities as host sites for our volleyball tournaments we now have a requirement that each parent, player and coach be educated about concussions. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has put together Fact Sheets for Coaches, Players and Parents. We are now requiring a form from each player and their parent or legal guardian that acknowledges that they have read the form and understand what a concussion is. This form (which requires signatures of both the player and parent) will be turned into club who will copy it for the coach of the team and then turn it over to the Region office to be kept on file until the players are the age of majority plus 2 years - which is 20 years of age. The coach of the team will be checked at each tournament to make sure they have a copy of this form along with the medical release form in order for the player to participate in the tournament. The coaches will be educated on the signs and symptoms of concussion in their IMPACT training as well as receive a copy of the Coaches Fact Sheet for their education. Anyone participating in high school volleyball has already had to view the 20 minute NFHS concussion education clinic online.
Please print off the Fact Sheets and the Acknowledgement Form below, read the Fact Sheets, sign the form and turn into your club with the other club related paperwork following tryouts.
If you have any questions about this form or procedures, please contact the Region office.

2012 Season Registration Is Open
Registration for 2012 is now open.
Let's get one item straight before we let you know about what is new.The first week in September an email was sent out through WebPoint to all who were registered in the 2011 season. The email indicated that the membership expires on Sept 15th. Once logged in the record shows it expiring on Oct 31st. There is a reason we indicated Sept 15th in the email. The USAV membership has a two month window of overlap between Sept 1st and Oct 31st. There are some regions that offer progamming that runs between July and the end of September. The Arizona Region starts our new programming on Sept 1st with the boys club programs. Therefore we require that anyone registering for the new season to do so beginning Sept 1st. We are not able to register new members in two different seasons at the same time.
There are many girls club programs that run fall clinics and camps. These require the member to be registered in the current season. So we require any girls that are going to participate in camps, clinics AND/OR TRYOUTS to renew their membership beginning Sept 1st to make sure they have completed the registration BEFORE they participate in any camps, clinics or tryouts. PLEASE don't wait until the end of October to register for tryouts.
There are a few changes coming on board for the new season with regard to registration.
This will be our second season with the WebPoint registration system. Everyone that registered last season should have a username and password to renew their membership. We expect the registration process to be a little smoother now that everyone knows what they are doing. For those that have moved here from a different region last year, please contact the Arizona Region office to move your membership into Arizona BEFORE you proceed with the renewal. If this is not done you will be renewing in your old region.
New for the 2012 season for registration:
- There is now the ability to pay for your membership online with a credit card. The membership will become effective immediately upon completion of the registration process. You can still choose to pay by check or cash but you will need to print off the Registration Payment form off the AZ Region website and submit your payment. The registration will not be completed until it has been processed by the AZ Region office and therefore could delay participation at tryouts or camps/clinics. If submitting payment by mail please give yourself plenty of time for this process to take place.
- Membership types have changed. For Juniors you will now choose a Boys Membership ($50) or a Girls Membership ($25). The boys will be starting September 1st so their full membership price shown is the full price. For girls the membership price of $25 will allow you to participate in any fall clinics, camps and tryouts. Once you join a club the club will collect the additional $25 to bring the membership to a full membership. The club will submit the payment to the Region office to allow the player to be put on a roster. At that time a birth certificate will be required to be given to the club if one is not already on file with the Region office. Once you join a club you will need to go back into WebPoint and select the club you have joined. You will also be required to submit the Concussion Acknowledgement Form to the club upon committing to the club.
There is now an Outdoor membership for $15 which is a full season outdoor only membership – a full season beach membership. The membership is annual and does not allow any participation on an indoor team. The membership type will not be able to be put on a roster. This membership can be upgraded to a full membership if participation indoor is needed as either a player or coach.
8 and Under memberships are now available. An 8 and under membership is free. This is for participants in youth programming like First Touch programs or Hot Ta-Volleys. If the 8 and under participant is going to play on a regular club team for competition he/she will need to register for a full junior membership.
Collegiate Memberships ($15) are for adult players only that are students in college. If a college age player is also a junior club coach this membership is NOT for them. Junior coaches will need to be full adult members with background screens. Proof of current registration at a college/university is required.
Adult full memberships ($50) are for adult players on indoor teams, junior coaches, club directors, officials. When registering as a full adult member make sure to select ALL roles you are filling as a member of the Arizona Region. If you are also officiating or associated with a junior club you must indicate the role in the registration process in order for the background screen application to appear. Background screens are required every two consecutive seasons for anyone officiating or associated with a junior club. Doing this all online will make the process smoother.
All coaches of junior teams must be registered online and paid a minimum of 2 weeks prior to any tryouts or camps/clinics that you will be participating in.
Background Screen charges have remained at $20 per screen. Chaperone memberships have remained at $25 per person as well.
You can find all this registration information on our website – under Join the Region. If you have any questions or need help with registration don’t hesitate to contact the Arizona Region office at 480-626-6740 or lisa@azregionvolleyball.org
