Calling all Women Volleyball players. The Arizona Region will be holding tryouts for the first ever Arizona Sizzle - Arizona's entry into the Premier Volleyball League. The Arizona Sizzle team will be competing at the USA Volleyball Open Championships in Salt Lake City. The team will compete in the PVL Division against teams from 9 other Regions. If the Arizona Sizzle qualifies at the US Open Championships a second tournament will take place at Girl's Jr National Championships in Columbus, OH in late June. Prize money will be awarded following the second tournament.

Tryouts will be held Friday, April 13th at the Spiral Volleyball Facility. Tryouts will be held from 6:30 pm - 9 pm. Participants should arrive by 5:30 to have their picture taken and complete registration paperwork including a short player profile before the tryouts begin. There is no charge to tryout.

Those interested must have completed any collegiate eligibility before participating in the tryouts or with the team.

A makeup tryout will be held on Sunday, April 15th from 10 am - 1 pm for those that are not able to attend on Friday night. Every effort should be made to attend the Friday night tryouts.

The Arizona Sizzle will be coached by Molly Stark and assisted by Amanda Omar. Players will be provided all transportation, room and board for their time at the US Opens (and Girls JNC if qualified). A small stipend will also be paid to those on the team.

2nd Vulture Peak Sees Even More Success in 2012

The second annual Vulture Peak Challenge saw the tournament double in size in one year and create a financial impact on the town of Wickenburg going forward into the coming years.
Thirty nine teams in all pushed the limits of both Wickenburg High School and Vulture Peak Middle school to their court limits with the final point finishing at 8:41 p.m. Sunday night.
Fluid AZ. 14-1’s team topped the AZU 14 Green team for the 14’s title. Northern Az. Jr.s 14’s took third.

The Ultimate Volleyball Club’s 17 Victorious Secret took a three set 18’s division final from Az. Dynamite’s 18’s, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11. NAVA’s 17’s from Flagstaff took third place.
In the 16’s division, the Az. Sky 15 Heat beat the Az. Rumble 16’s 25-20, 25-13 to win the gold medal. Az. Sky’s 16 Insanity won third place.

The Vulture Peak Challenge features some rule’s differences from regular region tournaments. Liberos can serve in this tournament and most teams used this throughout to their advantage. The other distinct difference is in the event of three way ties during pool play, the tie is settled ON the court with a queen’s tournament instead of by points and games. Two pools, one in the 16’s division and one in the 14’s were settled with this unique tie breaking procedure.
Sunday afternoon also saw a grass tournament on the football field for those teams that finished their morning pool and were looking for some more play. NAVA took the gold medal and Sparks the silver in the fours tournament.

Two local hotels sold out their rooms on Saturday night and a few restaurants were asked to extend their hours for those teams and officials playing the late pool on Saturday night. All those restaurants enjoyed extra business for their efforts.

Culver’s stationed a working grill at Wickenburg High School both days of the tournament and enjoyed robust business throughout selling fresh make hamburgers and frozen custard.

Limited court space will be a challenge going forward with this popular Region offering. Meetings will be held in the fall to proceed with the growth this tournament has had in just two years.
Special thanks to Wickenburg H.S. Athletic Director Greg Clark, Alan Clark, Phil Snyder, Christy Naughton, Ashley Jacobs, Lisa Ramirez, Christina Wycoff, Landen Woodword, Becky Hudson and a special thanks to Audie Gonzalez. These folks kept the tournament running seamlessly.
