New Parent Newsletter launches

In an effort to reach out to yet another sector of volleyball "participants", the Arizona Region has launched a new e-newsletter aimed at educating parents in all aspects of the volleyball world. The PIN - Parent Information Newsletter will be sent out to those subscribing twice a year. The first issue - Winter 2009 - is attached here in pdf. It comes much more colorful with active links when it arrives in your email inbox. The pdf formatting loses the color and some of the formatting. Eric Hodgson and Christy Naughton will bring you informative articles or links to articles to educate parents to the world of club volleyball.

The first issue - Winter 2009 - lets the reader know about the new rules that will be in play for juniors and adults this season, discusses the use of disposable water bottles at our tournaments, discusses the decision to "play up" for your son or daughter, includes the article "Parents As Architects: An expansive perspective on
creating good sports" by David Canning Epperson of Parents For Good Sports and Volleyball Festival fame, links you to the latest addition to the USAV website Resource page "Becoming a Collegiate Student Athlete" and lastly the How To - put together a great recruiting video.

To sign up for The PIN, click on the e-newsletter sign up box to the left and select the newsletters you would like to receive. Please note that the Arizona Region does not sell any of our lists to vendors, sponsors, clubs, or anyone else that requests access to our lists. When you put in your email address it will only be used for what you have requested. If at any time you want to unsubscribe, please just send us an email with Unsubscribe and the name of the newsletter you want to stop receiving in the Subject line of the email and we will remove you.

We hope you enjoy the newest newsletter of the Arizona Region!

Education Weekend Approaches

The Arizona Region of USA Volleyball is dedicated to education - of coaches, officials, players and parents. With that in mind an Education Weekend has been established for the weekend of Dec 4-6, 2010. Scheduled events include:

Coaches Education

  • Dec 4th - IMPACT Clinic - taught by John Kessel of USAV - 6-10 pm at ASU PE West Building on the ASU main campus in Tempe;

  • Dec 4th - IMPACT Instructor Clinic - taught by John Kessel - 5 pm - 10:30 pm - includes the IMPACT clinic above with specific instructor sessions prior and following the IMPACT clinic;

  • Dec 5th & 6th - CAP I & II Courses - ASU PE West Building on ASU main campus in Tempe. Cadre for the CAP courses are: John Kessel - USAV, Bill Neville - former Men's National team coach and University of Washington Women's Volleyball Coach; Stu Sherman - former Graceland University Men's VB Coach; Bill Hamiter - USA Men's Sitting Team Coach, University of Central Oklahoma.
    The Arizona Region has discounted the cost of CAP I and CAP II for all Arizona coaches - park and rec, junior high, high school, club, collegiate. You do not have to be a member of the Arizona Region to take this discount. This is the link for the Arizona coaches to sign up for CAP course on the USAV Website
  • Register early as there are early registration discounts that expire on Nov 6th. Regular registration deadline expires on Nov 27th. After Nov 27th late fees are added to the cost of registration.
  • For those that might need a hotel room a room block has been set up at the Four Points by Sheraton - Tempe (corner of Rural Rd and Apache Blvd) for this CAP Course. Please contact Judith Sebastian (480-968-3451). The room rate is $95 per night (plus applicable taxes) which includes free airport and local shuttle to site, free internet access, free cooked to order breakfast, free bottle water in the room and a free newspaper. The rooms are double queens so you can share the cost with another coach. This rate expires on Nov 4th so register early. After Nov 4th a room may still be reserved but it is based on current availability and room rate.

Officials Education

  • For new officials or officials that have been in the Region less than 4 years a training clinic has been established on Dec 5th from 9 am - 3 pm at the Salvation Army Gym - 1351 E. Broadway Road, Phoenix, 85040. Please let the Region office know if you plan to attend as pizza lunch will be provided;
  • For officials that have been in the Region 4+ years the training clinic will be held on Dec 12th from 9 am - 1 pm. Please let the Region office know if you will be attending.
  • For officials wishing to opt out of the scorekeeping training on Dec 5th, print off the test, complete the test and bring it to the training session on Dec. 5th

Parent Education

  • The Parents for Good Sports organization will be providing a parent clinic on Friday, Dec 4th, at 6 pm at ASU. The clinic will offer an overview of their Parents for Good Sports program and the introduction of a new program with USA Volleyball. Each club is asked to send 1 or 2 parents as club parent representatives. The parents will be treated to a parent clinic presented by David Epperson and Lily Richardson and then asked to participate in a survey relating to club volleyball and their club, the Region and to USA Volleyball. The parents will then be the liaison to the club on behalf of the other parents in the club.
  • In conjunction with Volleyball Festival Preview Tournament Parents for Good Sports Clinics are being formalized for the President's Day weekend in February. The time and location will be posted here when known.
  Take advantage of these many educational opportunities. When we all get better at what we do - coaches, officials and parents - our kids benefit.
