2008
High Performance Championships comes to Tucson
The
2008 High Performance Championships comes to Tucson July
23-27. The tournament will be held at the Tucson Convention
Center. For the second year in a row, the USA Volleyball
High Performance Championships will combine both the boys’ and
girls’ events into one concurrent tournament format.
Titles up for grabs for girls include Girls’ International
Junior, Girls’ International Youth, Girls’ National
Youth and Girls’ National Select. Championships to
be contested for boys include the Boys’ International
Youth and Boys’ National Select.
To
increase the festive atmosphere of the event, an Opening
Ceremonies and dinner buffet will be held in the Grand
Ballroom of the Tucson Convention Center the evening of
July 22. Former USA National Team player Kevin Barnett
will be the keynote speaker. Deadline to reserve your tickets

The
Arizona Region has three teams participating in the event.
One boys team will compete in the International Youth division.
Two girls teams will participate in the International Youth
and Girls National Select Divisions. Arizona training team

Pool
play for all division will take place July 23-25. Bracket
play for all divisions will take place on July 26 with
the finals of all International Divisions settled that
day. Championships for the National Divisions will be completed
by 12:30 p.m. on July 27.
Event
tickets are $8 per day or a tournament pass can be purchased
for $32.
Region
Championships Finish off in a Flurry
The
2008 Region Champions were crowned a little later
this year than most. Following Memorial Day weekend
the Region kicked into gear and crowned the Girls
14's, 16's, 18's and Open Division Champions. The
season was pushed back to allow teams to be competitive
later into the season and closer to season ending
tournaments and the National Championships. This
was given mixed reviews and will be a topic of
discussion at the Board retreat in July.
The
USA Jr. Beach Tour stop held June 14th and 15th at
Victory Lanes Sports Complex gave some local athletes
an opportunity to show their game to a USA Volleyball
staff and qualify for the 2009 International Beach
Developmental Camp held in El Segundo in June of
2009.
Your
winners for Desert Open included:
Boys U14- Brandon
Barrett, (Glendale), and Ryne Benson, (Phoenix),
took the gold medal, Johnathan Clark and Drew Davis,
(Both of Glendale), earned the silver medal.
Boys U18- Kevin
Villela and Bobby Schwartzkopf, (Glendale), took
the gold, Stevin Solis and Joaquin Santa Cruz,
(Avondale), took the silver and Jon Smoot and Christopher
Henry, (Gilbert) took the bronze.
Girls U18- Betsi
Metter and Anna Gott,(Ahwatukee), topped Melissa
New (Phoenix) and Kelsey Janke (Scottsdale) for
the gold.
Girls U12- Haley
and Katrina Morten, (Pearland, Texas) took the
gold medal, Victoria Svornic, Scottsdale), and
Jordan Anderson, (Phoenix), the silver and Alyssa
Steagull and Jemma Yeadon, (Phoenix), the bronze
Girls U14- Hannah
Brown and Sydney Schumacher, (Phoenix) won the
gold medal, Kayley Siekman, (Glendale), and Allie
Svornic, (Scottsdale), the silver with Sarah Sponcil
and Amanda Benson, (Phoenix), the bronze.
Girls U16- Noel
Pagua (Peoria) and Lexi Anderson, (Phoenix), won
the gold medal, Sarah Sponcil and Amanda Benson,
(Phoenix), the silver and Kirea Mazzolini and Rebecca
Sponcil, (Phoenix) the bronze.
