Arizona High Performance
Team Set to Compete
The Arizona Region of USA Volleyball is proud
to announce its High Performance team that will compete against other High
Performance teams from all over the United States and other countries in the
2002 Salt Lake VolleyClassic to be held from July 23-28 Salt Lake City.
This High Performance team is the second one
Arizona has had and only one of a handful of programs across the country.
The High performance Program is used as a
pipeline for talent from the Regional level up through the National and
eventually the Olympic level of USA Volleyball.
USA Volleyball officials and coaches will watch the teams competing in
the VolleyClassic to see if any of the participants might be Olympic material
in the next quadrennial.
uniqueness of this HP offering from Arizona is its diversity.
Almost 30 girls tried out from all parts of the State.
While the majority of the athletes that tried out were from the Phoenix
metro area, players from Tucson, Sierra Vista, Show Low and the Navajo Reservation were selected for the squad. While
16 were chosen only 12 will travel to Utah.
The coach selected by USA Volleyball to head
this second year is Glendale Community College head coach for women’s
volleyball, Lisa Stuck. Stuck was selected for this position because of her
strong background in volleyball. Her coaching experience at Arizona colleges
dates back to 1991. Stuck said she can bring her personal experience and her
knowledge to the team and players.
“ I have been in their position and I have been coaching for a long time. I think this combination is important,” Stuck said.
Stuck’s assistant coaches are Uyen Cao, assistant coach at Glendale Community College and Molly West, the head volleyball coach at Desert Vista High School
